2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime – Typically, when we think of a hybrid vehicle is efficiency, and more efficiency quickly come to mind. However, in today’s world with all of these fast all-electric is Tesla’s driving around in a hybrid vehicle can sort of feel like driving yesterday’s technology which brings me to the latest addition to the Toyota hybrid family meet the all-new 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime it’s based on the lovely RAV4 hybrid that we drove last year.

Toyota bring this car with a much more masculine, much more rugged look from front fascia. It has swiveling adaptive LED headlights you have an LED daytime running light an incandescent turn signal.
We’ll leave you low and high beams and then for the prime if you guys go for the XSE version you have this new LED vertical light strip. That replaces the fog lights that you get on the regular 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime which we actually like the way this looks especially when the LED running lights are on. We think that Toyota made the prime look a lot more premium.
This car still gets around 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Of course, you also get the blue hybrid badge and a slightly different look to the grille. So we think that Toyota has really nailed the overall look of the prime especially when you guys go for the top-of-the-line XS. When you also go for the XSE trim you’ve got 19-inch wheels which it is the first time we’re getting a 19-inch wheel on a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. It’s wrapped in 235 with tires. If you guys forego for the base got an 18-inch wheel the brakes are also a nearly 13 inches in diameter.
In terms of the size, this car still is about the same size. It’s around a hundred and seventy nine point five inches long. So, this is on the smaller end compared to the competition but it doesn’t look that way as you can see this generation 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime looks a lot like a Highlander. Because it’s very big, it’s very blocky, and like we said it has eight point three inches of ground clearance. So, you could still technically take this thing off roading. Getting over to the rear the prime also has the same kind of look.
As the regular RAV4 is you have the same kind of LED nation taillights the turn signals are not LED. We wish the Toyota had done that there’s that very distinctive silver strip that connects the two taillight modules together. Then the bumper there as you can see is also black painted you have dual exhaust tips which we weren’t expecting to find dual exhaust tips on this car.
As you can see the seat has kind of the black soft tex leather red. It has some red accent stitching when you look at the seats. They’re actually a very nice-looking seat design. We like the red stitching we like the red piping over there. When you guys go for the Premium Package, it’s an eight-way power on the driver’s side on the passenger side there. It’s just a four-way power so kind of keep that in mind remember the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is not a Lexus or anything like that now when you shut the door, the door has a relatively solid sounding thunk.
As you can see with this interior, it’s practically identical to a regular 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime with some new options. There heads-up display is new, and you also get a new 9-inch infotainment system which doesn’t really look all that bigger compared to 2019 model. Start via the power button is quiet, because a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid there’s no engine starter noise.
Then you have an 8-way power driver seat with a lumbar support some more buttons over there. For your heated wheel you can turn on the AC 120-volt power outlet. There’s a heated windshield automatic high beam. There’s a little bit of storage over here and over all the materials are pretty nice. The steering wall is a manual tilt telescoping we kind of wish that. Toyota had given the prime a more aggressive looking steering OL maybe a flat bottom design.
This wheel is starting to look a little bit tired it does include paddle shifters on the wheel this steering was introduced on the Camry back in 2017. We are happy with the Android auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa that is standard. If you guys go for the SE trim, you’ll have an eight-inch display this is the slightly larger 9-inch display with lots of hard buttons.
Unlike the regular hybrid Toyota has fortified this new prime with an additional 83 horsepower up to 42 miles of all-electric range. Toyota says you’ll get to 60 and around 5.7 seconds. It’s supposed to be the most performance-oriented hybrid vehicle that the company has ever produced. So, the big question we want answered with the primes additional power 42 miles of all-electric range and of course the comfort and convenience that we expect from a RAV4 has Toyota succeeded in building a plug-in hybrid SUV that can rival Tesla that’s what we’re here to find out.
Now because the RAV4 Prime is all about the powertrain we figured we’d start with what’s going on underneath. First of all, the hood is much lighter than the last RAV4 hybrid that we drove. So, we are imagining Toyota had made the roof or the hood a little bit lighter to save a little bit of weight because they added a lot more weight.
When you pop open this hood now of course we’ve got the standard 2.5-liter dynamic force four-cylinder engine. That runs on the Atkinson cycle as well the motor by itself makes 177 horsepower and 165-pound feet of torque those numbers are slightly better versus the regular RAV4 hybrid.
Of course it pairs with two electric motors here at the front they combine to make 179 additional HP. When you combine the electric motor with the gas motor at the front? Toyota says you get 302 horsepower 302 horsepower that’s more horsepower. Then what you’re going to get and a lot of the plug-in hybrid all-electric or luxury SUVs like the BMW X3 iDrive or whatever, the RAV4 Prime comes standard with all-wheel-drive. The way it delivers all-wheel-drive is through a separate rear electric motor.
So, this car has two in total three electric motors. The rear electric motor only makes around 53 horsepower so that really doesn’t add that much but again everything combines to make 302 Toyota does not quote the actual torque figures of everything combined.
So, all we have is that horsepower number it also is paired with a continuously variable transmission of course that is different than something like an all-electric vehicle which just uses a single speed reduction gear where it essentially has no gears. And like we said earlier all-wheel drive is standard. Toyota says this car will tow a maximum of twenty-five hundred pounds is actually a thousand pounds more than the regular hybrid. And fuel efficiency that’s very important with these the gas engine is ready to get around 40 in the city and 36 on the highway 38 combined.
That’s only a two mpg reject reduction from the regular hybrid which is pretty good for something that’s this big and heavy. Toyota says you’ll also be able to go around forty-two miles on all-electric range because you have an eighteen-point one kilowatt hour battery.
