2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge – As you know, a lot of brands are transitioning toward electric vehicles and for volvo we’re standing next to the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, their first full ev model and what better way to base it off of than the stylish xc40.

So while it may look similar, there are obviously a ton of differences. So let’s, go ahead and see how it stacks up against things like the tesla model Y. So, like i already mentioned it’s, not immediately going to be obvious that this is a full electric vehicle, because it does share probably 95 of its exterior styling with the regular xc40.

What You Have to Get From 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge
However, that’s, certainly a good thing, because the 2021 Volvo XC40 is a really stylish crossover. Now i’ll start in the front. This is basically the main difference that you’re, going to notice with this recharge model and that’s. The fact that the grille is filled in with a body colored panel, because of course you don’t, have an engine that needs airflow or anything like that. So that’s, going to be the most notable part of it.
Exterior
You do have a piano black accent down here at the bottom as well. Now, as far as your headlights, these are exactly the same as the gas powered model, so they are the full led headlights with the thor’s, hammer daytime running light and turn signal indicator, and they also have active bending abilities and then down below You have led fog lights now, taking a look at the wheels.
These are pretty similar to what you get on a normal 2021 Volvo . This is the 19-inch contrast, alloy design that comes standard with the recharge model. You can also get an optional 20-inch alloy. If you want something a little bit bigger and then moving up to the mirrors, of course, they are blacked out to match with the contrast roof mason we’ll talk about in just a second and just like the gas powered xc40s.
Volvo is now throwing in every feature as standard equipment for the mirror, so that’s, power, folding, auto dimming, blind, spot monitoring and heating alrighty. So before we get around to the rear design of the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge.
2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Change
I do want to point out a few different things for one: the two-tone roof is going to be standard on this recharge model and it’s only available in black, where you can get white on the regular version, and there is also some recharge Branding right here kind of engraved in and then this is going to be your charge port right here on the back, so that’s, unique because some of the other volvos with the t8 are in the front now, as far as the rear design Itself goes there’s, not going to be a lot different for this recharge model.
You have to have a really keen eye to tell a difference and starting out with the individual design elements it’s going to be these signature. 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge tail lights. These are going to stay partially led.
You have the led accenting, however, the brake light and turn signal or incandescent. The reverse light is led, though, and then dropping down to the diffuser. All this is going to be a black molded plastic and of course, there are no exhaust pipes, as you would expect.
However, that’s really been eliminated from all 2021 Volvo XC40 in 2021, so you’re, really not missing out on much now. The xc40 is going to come with the majority of their safety systems standard on all of the models, so that’s, going to be forward emergency, braking and pedestrian detection lane keeping assist and auto high beam headlamps.
Interior
Doesn’t cost you anything, and it really helps us out so be sure to do that. But now let’s, go ahead and check out this unique interior, which i know has kind of some orange accents in there. So we’ll check that out before we take this electric model out in a spin so walking out to the XC40 Recharge.
You will find the typical volvo key fob, which has this square design and your buttons on the side and then to get inside. You’ll, just reach behind the handle, since there is a sensor, [, Music, ], all right and taking a look inside of this cabin.
You’ll, see mostly the same kind of fun and funky design that you’re used to seeing in the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, but there are some special touches inside of this cabin. Once we kind of dig into that part. Let’s. First talk about probably the elephant in the room and that’s, the interior, color and material options.
So, with the recharge you’re, going to have standard, nubuck leather trim, seats with the or excuse me nappa. Leather seats with the nubuck inserts in the middle they come in black. Only. However, you do have the choice to add this special orange carpeting in the door trim as well as on the ground, which really adds a vibrant touch to the cabin now turning over here.

To your door trim, you’ll, see nice materials reflected up here, so we have a leather material that runs all through here, as well as along the top. We have an aluminum trim and then all four of our windows will be one touch automatic. We also have two person memory seating, coming to your seats, this typical volvo affair. You have 10 ways of power adjustment, including four-way, lumbar support, as well as a manual thigh extension, and then i already described the material the seat, but i will say in typical volvo fashion extremely comfortable.
Now, like i already mentioned most of this cabin is the same as the regular xc40, and that is a good thing. So across our upper dashboard, we have a soft touch plastic, as we move down below that. We have aluminum trim more soft touch materials through here and then along the side.
We have a lot more of this really vivid. Looking orange carpeting, like i said, certainly a fun and uh exciting kind of cabin. Now you’ll notice up here. There is no button to start the vehicle that’s because just like with tesla and some other electric cars, if you to start the vehicle, you’re, just going to put your foot on the brake and then, when you shift into Gear, that is when the vehicle will start up.
So immediately you are probably going to notice a big difference from the regular xc40, as well as the rest of the volvo lineup, and that is this 12.3 inch reconfigurable gauge cluster. Now i’m, not going to get into it fully right here. We’ll come a little later in the video, but this comes with the new android based infotainment system. It’s, the first volvo to have that, and that does mean that this gauge cluster is completely renovated.
With new software, as you can see, it has a new design, as well as the display itself. It’s, a lot higher resolution and a lot less reflective than in other volvo products. Now what we have on there right now is our basic information.
With a large map display in the middle. You can press a button on the steering wheel here to change between a few different designs as well, and it’s, just it’s fully reconfigurable. Now, coming back to the steering wheel, we have a typical volvo brand steering wheel, but it is nicely leather wrapped. We have perforation here on the side as well as a double color contrast, stitching detail. The wheel itself is going to be manual tilt and telescoping and we have heating as optional in the 750 dollar climate package.
But i want to go ahead and talk about interior storage, because this is something that every version of the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge is really strong at. So we’ll start underneath our center console here. So we have a really nicely sized center console very nice and deep there’s, a fell lying down at the bottom.

We have a little bit of storage along the side. Volvo also move the speakers up so that you have all this area as free for door storage. So basically, this is about as good as it’s, going to get for a sub compact crossover to have this much storage, all right now, heading back here to the shifter.
This is the same shifter as the normal XC40 Recharge. So just put your foot on the brake bump back to the d4 drive. Obviously there’s, not going to be like manual shifting or anything like that, push up to go into reverse, and when you do, you will see the standard backup camera up here, so it does have active trajectory down here.
We can also push this button right here and go into a 360 degree view that’s, part of the advanced package that this specific tester has and just like. In other volvo products we can actually isolate different cameras, so we can go to the front or to the side to make sure we don’t scrape our rims or anything like that.
Your fan speeds, of course you can go into automatic mode and then right here is where you can turn on and off your heated seats with your standard equipment and then that optional heated steering wheel that i already mentioned so with this new system. 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge
I feel like the biggest takeaway here is that this is not just a rehash of android auto. It is a totally different system. It’s, much closer to the traditional volvo system that you’re used to than it is to android. Auto so this is by no means going to be a full comprehensive look um, because we have just gotten in this vehicle – and i’m still learning about it here. But what we have on board are basically our tabs that run down the center home display here, just like in the traditional volvo.
The big difference is, though, we have all of these google apps that are built right into the system, so you notice this here is google maps, so you have the full power of google maps, including the live traffic stuff like that built right into the display and Another great feature of this system is the fact that it has the google assistant built in.
So you can just press the button on the steering wheel to launch straight into that, or you can also say: hey. Google call mason calling mason, so you have the full fluidity of that, which is frankly a lot better than what most automakers have as their built-in setup.
And then the last thing i do want to mention real fast is just the fact that volvo, as far as the entire vehicle and this system will be getting over the air update, so it will get better over time now. 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. Moving on up here, we do have an auto dimming mirror with homelink universal remotes built into it, and up at the very top we have a panoramic moon roof with a kind of transparent sunshade. The operation is a little bit different.
It’s like a touch pad up here, so you just swipe back on the touch pad, and this is what opens up the sun shade alrighty. So i’m in the xc40 recharge’s, rear seat and i’m happy to say this is just like any 2021 Volvo as you would expect, because it really is spacious and very comfortable, especially for the segment that this Competes in so as far as the legroom figures you’re gonna have 36 inches of rear, legroom 39 inches of your headroom, which just place it above the clasp below, like the mercedes gla in that type of segment.
But if you’re, comparing this to like a tesla model y, that’s, probably right on par with that. Now, as far as the space behind roof seating position, i have five inches of rear legroom and my feet can easily set up underneath the seat.
Now, as far as the features set here in the center, we are going to have vents. These are going to be standard on all of them and then dropping down. We have two usb type-c ports and heated. Rear seats are going to be included in that climate package. Then, if we fold down the center armrest, we do have cup holders inside now. On the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, you are going to have a standard, hands-free power, tailgate, just wave your foot under the bumper to open it up.
Let’s, try again button. It is, and once it opens up, you are going to find 21 cubic feet of space behind the second row, seats that expands to 47 cubic feet if you fold them. So if you’re, comparing it to the gla and stuff like that, that is going to be right on par with the segment. However, if you’re, going for like a tesla model y, once again that’s, probably going to be a little bit less space than that now, as far as how volvo has finished it, we do have a carpeting along the floor.
If we lift it up, there is some space up under here, so that you can store some stuff and you also have their unique floor, storage and then up top. We have a cargo cover and you can fold the seat. 60.40 split and there is a trunk pass-through but, as you might expect, with an electric car, there is also a frunk. So let’s. Push it once and then run up here and find the lever right here and it does open right up, and then you have a little cover on top. So you lift that up and then that’s going to reveal not very much it’s, some space i mean you might be able to fit like a single grocery bag.
I’m, not really sure there’s, not much space in here it’s. Definitely not like a tesla model y frunk by any means it’s just a little bit of space. Specification
Money can buy um and it translates to 402 horsepower so that’s, a lot of power for a small subcompact crossover like yeah. This is, and they’re rating, it at 486 pound-feet of torque on their building price, and you know that like drew mentioned, electric cars have a lot a lot of torque. So you really appreciate that yeah, if you haven’t like experienced it, it’s really, unlike anything with gas, because it just comes on suddenly and all at once, and it really slams you back and there’s.
No need to shift gears or anything so that’s right. It just goes and it’s 4.7 seconds 0-60 as its official rating, so that is faster than the standard range model y and it’s faster than our standard range model.
2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric Range
Three yeah, and if you’re wondering how all that comes to be what it is, is a 75 kilowatt hour battery paired with two electric motors, so it is all-wheel drive as well now, as far as the range range is probably the most important Thing you can ask for with any electric car.
I know you guys are probably very curious about this. This XC40 Recharge is going to be rated at 208 miles by the epa on a full charge um. As far as how that compares to the competition like the tesla model y, they recently released the standard range model and that has 244 miles of range, so that is less range than that standard range model and for the price you could definitely get like a long Range which has over 300 miles so this is a little bit down, but really this is one of the best electric offerings.
If you’re looking outside of tesla right and frankly, there’s, not that many electric offerings anyways. So the only things that really come to mind right now is the ford mustang mock e and the model Y. As far as your you know, major electric crossovers, you can choose between yeah. This is really surprisingly fun to drive vehicle um. I guess i can talk about the driving dynamics. Um, i will say this is definitely tuned to be more sporty than the other xc40.
So i really noticed that right behind the wheel, it’s, not just the speed um, but it’s. The fact that i there’s like a steering mode, it’s called like stiff steering mode and that’s turned on by default and you know i can really feel the steering has been tuned to be so much quicker, so much heavier feeling. I really like it actually a lot better than what you get in the gas powered 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge and tell them about the one pedal driving here.
That’s right, so this, of course, like many electric vehicles, you can just drive with just the gas pedal uh. So you just kind of let off the region is very strong. You can turn this on or off, depending on what your preference is, but you can very easily just kind of ease off start to slow up and then it will bring itself to a quick, stop and hold so never touching the brake pedal at all.
How much the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Price?
You know we’ve, always really been fans of like the cabin stuff like that, and you know all that is still present here with the recharge version. So you know you don’t have anything that’s like too weird or super hard to get used to, or anything like that.

Now for our airball, we’re, going to say that that’s. The pricing, so i’ll, go ahead and just read it off to you, but it is more expensive than something like a tesla model y. So it’s, going to start at $53.990. That’s, a starting price, but do keep in mind that it may qualify for the tax credit. I think it still qualifies for the 7.500 federal tax credit, so it may be more in line with the competition than the sticker suggests.
But this one, as equipped with the destination charge of 1095 and a lot of the options checked off, is $59.080 bucks so overall in the blossoming segment of full electric crossovers. I think this 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge really is a strong contender.
