2022 Hyundai Kona – So over the last few years, hyundai has introduced a wide range of crossovers to their lineup, including this subcompact kona. It made quite the splash, with its very bold and unique styling, and now for 2022. It’s time for the kona to head under the knife, for an extensive refresh so with an updated look, new tech and the addition of an inline to the lineup. Is this kona, the small suv to buy?
What You Have to Get From 2022 Hyundai Kona
So starting up here in the front, this is the area where you can really see the biggest changes for the 2022 refresh, since basically, the entire front end is fully redesigned to have a lot Of a more rounder and i’d, say more refined and sophisticated look to it, while still maintaining that kind of funky edge that the 2022 Hyundai Kona has always been known for so up here in the front you will notice, like i said, the more rounded Off hood, we have a less of a sharp grille than before.
It was more of like a sharp triangle. Now it’s, more rounded off with the black mesh inside and then down here at the bottom. We do have a silver accent that runs all through here now coming over here to your headlights. These continue to have the same funky look as last year, but everything has been updated, so it’s split into two different pieces.
This top part is a standard, led daytime running light and turn signal across all of the models and then down here at the second area you’ll notice. We have led headlights that’s exclusive to the limited trim or optional on the inline. All the other models will come with a halogen headlight instead, but these right here have a really nice look to them.
Now, when it comes to the wheels hyundai is nice enough to throw in alloy wheels across every single trim level. So you start with 16 alloys with the scl you move up to 17-inch alloys and then your top two trim levels. Those are both going to come with 18-inch alloys with very different, but very distinctive designs.
Like you see here with this limited model, looks very similar actually to what you get with the brand new tucson and then i should also mention, while i’m Down here about the cladding, all the models will continue to have this thick cladding around the vehicle. It will be body color on the in line, but this does give it a nice rugged, look and then coming up here to your mirrors. Everything except for the base model, will come with heating and blind spot monitoring all right.
So you might be curious as to how this 2022 Hyundai Kona fits into the hyundai lineup, and it comes in at 165 inches in length, which is around 17 inches shorter than a tucson, but still about 7 inches longer than a venue. Now, as far as the rear design, they haven’t changed as much back here as they did in the front, but they still have changed a few elements. So as far as the design itself is concerned, we have this piece right here through the middle, that’s, chrome and then for our tail lights.
We have led tail lights. These are going to be led on the limited trim or you can get them optionally on the inline and if we drop down to here, this is where you ‘ Ll find your led turn signal and you’re, also going to have your incandescent reverse light.
Now, if we drop down to the lower diffuser, we do have this nice silver trim and you will not find exposed exhaust outlets until you get to the inline model. Now, as far as your safety systems are concerned, it is broken up depending on the trim level.
You select for the kona, so standard on. All of them is going to be ford emergency, braking with pedestrian detection, as well as lane keeping assist. If you get the seo or higher, that’s, going to throw in rear, auto braking, and if you get the limited trim that’s, also going to throw in adaptive cruise control and your auto high beams.
So, taking a look inside at the cabin you will notice, there are less changes to the interior than with the exterior. However, once you really start to look around at the details, there’s actually more. That’s different than what initially meets the eye. So let’s, go ahead and talk about your interior, color and material options to start with, so on the se and the sel. Those will come standard with cloth seating.
The inline will come with a special sport cloth seating and then this limited is the only model that’s going to come with leather seating. Now, since this is really quite early to have, the 2022 Hyundai Kona has not released the full interior color options.
However, i would expect you have got the same options as last year, which will be gray and black. Now, turning over here to your door trim. You have some gray leather over here for your arm to rest against and a little bit above it. This top part here does have a texture to it, but it is hard touch. You have a nice large door handle as far as the windows. They are going to be one touch auto up and down for the driver and the passenger and turning towards our seats.
These are eight-way power, adjusting with two-way lumbar support standard on the top two trim levels and then, like i was already mentioning this limited is the only model that’s going to come with other seating. This is a very nice looking seat, especially for this category of vehicle, with the perforation in the middle and the color contrast stitching. Now this is a subcompact crossover. After all, so you’re, not going to expect to have a ton of luxury or anything like that.
That being said, this cabin is very well built so across our upper dash. This is going to be finished in a hard touch plastic, as we move down to this middle area. We have a soft touch rubber texture here with that same pattern from the door trim as we move down to our lower areas.
Of course, these are going to be hard touch plastic but, like i was saying, everything in here is really well put together very solid feeling and no panel gaps. Now, to start up, the 2022 Hyundai Kona put your foot on the brake and press the button, and as soon as you press that start button, you’ll notice, something very unusual for a subcompact crossover and that’s.
The fact we have a full digital gauge cluster, so this is the 10.25 inch digital gauge cluster. You see on a number of different hyundai products at more expensive price points, but we do have it here with this kona limited or it is also optional.
On the inline, and just like, with those other hyundai products, very vivid, looking a lot of different functionality and when you change your drive modes, the designs change, so definitely a very nice looking digital setup now moving back here to the steering wheel, we do have electric Power assisted steering and a nice leather wrapped steering wheel on the top two models.
As far as the wheel itself, it is going to be a manual tilt and telescoping heating is not available on any of the models. However, we do have reinstance wipers here with the limited and let’s, go ahead and take a look now at interior storage, because there have been a few adjustments to this area for 2022.
So i’ll start out underneath our center console here. This is a nicely sized center console quite deep, a good shape to it, and when we stick our big stack of coupons in here, we throw them in half a little bit there. As you can see, they fit in just right, like it was made for it now. What happened for 2022 Hyundai Kona is that our center console here has been rearranged, so you actually have a raised shifter with the storage up there and then down here.
We have our cup holders uh, we have the area where the hand brake is on the lower trims or the electronic parking brake on the upper end trips and then our other main storage areas are right up here. So we do have this large area here which doubles as a wireless phone charging pad on the upper end models.
You’ve got two usbs, a 12 volt outlet and then another shelf right there. Now, taking a look here at the shifter is just a traditional style shifter with the leather boot. Of course you can bump over here to the left. If you want to do some manual shifting, there are no paddle shifters on the steering wheel for the normal trim levels and then, when we go into reverse, we do have a standard backup camera with active trajectory as well as guidelines and with the limited trim.
We have rear parking sensors. You can also click here to change to some different views and then, like i already mentioned, you have the electronic parking brake with auto brake hold. This is new for 2022. , now around the shifter. We have some buttons, including for our heated seats. These are going to be included as standard equipment on the top two trim levels optional on the sel, and you can also turn on off your auto start.
Stop and your parking sensors right there. Now. As far as your climate controls, this is a single zone, automatic setup, and this is included with the top two trim levels. Once again, the other trim levels will come with manual, climate control, but operation very simple.
You have a large temperature adjustment right. There fan speeds and then all your other functions are located below that and now we’ll, go ahead and sample the audio system. Next, so, as you’d, expect for having the top end limited model, we do have a special sound system, so it’s, going to be an eighth speaker.
Harman kardon sound system and we’ll, go ahead and give it a sample now so wow. So overall, sound quality of this system is really quite excellent. Certainly one of the best sounding sound systems. I’ve heard in one of these sub compact crossovers, okay.
So now what you’re, looking at you’re, probably noticing, is a big change for 2022 and that’s. The fact that we’ve got the upgraded display in addition to that upgraded digital gauge cluster as well. So this is a 10.25 inch display up from the previous standard. Eight inch display.
This is included on the limited trim optional on the inline. The other models will continue to come with an eight inch display. Now, as you can see, it is running the latest hyundai software, so we kind of have the nicer graphics, the faster response and all the features on board.
Now, with the large display, we do have a built-in navigation system and as far as android, auto and apple car play, that’s, gonna be included on every single trim level. However, as with other hyundai and kia products uh, if you choose the larger display, you will have wired, android, auto and wired apple carplay, the smaller display, which is actually the majority of trim levels for this 2022 Hyundai Kona.
That’s, going to come with wireless Apple carplay and android, auto so just a little distinction to keep in mind now moving above that we do have an auto dimming mirror with homelink remotes for this limited trim level and then also included as standard on the limited.
Is this power sunroof? This is available as well with as an option on the inline and the seo alrighty guys. So i’m in the refreshed 2022 Hyundai Kona, rear seat and as far as the space is concerned, it’s, going to be actually very good for the segment.
So we have 35 inches of your legroom 38 inches of rear headroom, which puts it right on par with that of the mazda cx-30, as well as something like the honda hrv and behind your seating position. I have, i would say, probably three or so inches of your leg room and my feet can slide up underneath the seat so overall definitely pretty comfortable for this segment.
Now, as far as the features are concerned, we’re, not going to have vents or anything, but we do have a charging usb port here and then, if we fold down the armrest, we have cupholders inside now walking up to the tailgate, even though This is the limited model.
A power tailgate is not available on the 2022 Hyundai Kona, so just locate the button under the lid and lift up, and once you do, you’re, going to find 19 cubic feet of space behind the second row seats that expands all the way up to 45 cubic feet.
That is right in line with that of the competition, and i think that’s, a pretty good amount of space for this segment. Now, as far as how they finished it, we do have a cargo cover up top. If we lift the floor up here, we have a carpeting and then there is a little bit of additional storage.
I do want to point out, though, that you have to get a front-wheel drive model. If you want a spare tire and then, as far as the seats they do fold 60 40 split now the passenger seat over here is going to be manually. Adjusting then, if we look at our glove box, this is a good size, glove box. It’s, pretty much the standard affair for all hyundai kia products, and you know that the coupons are very important part about buying a new vehicle.
It’s about second on the list and they do fit in here. Just fine, so no problems there and you can save money and then up top. We have a sun visor with a mirror. We also have a light and we can detach it as well as the extent all right.
2022 Hyundai Kona Specification
We’re up to 60 miles an hour with this refreshed kona. So with the top two trim levels, the inline and the limited trim level. Those have an upgraded engine from the rest of the lineup, so what you’ve got is a 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and it’s, making 195 horsepower 195 pound-feet of torque, so that’s. Strong numbers for this category of vehicle and it’s, definitely nice that you get the more powerful motor with both the luxury minded kona and the sporty 2022 Hyundai Konayeah yeah for sure.
Now, if you do go for the uh lower trim levels, the sc and scl that’s, going to have the typical hyundai kia, two liter four-cylinder 137 horsepower 142 pound-feet of torque with that engine um. So this is quite a bit of a power. Upgrade so that’s, definitely something to consider when you’re shopping among the trim levels now.
Another important distinguishing factor between the powertrain setups is that you have different transmissions with the different motors. So what we have with this turbo 1.6 liter is a seven speed: dual clutch automatic transmission. So again that’s. Another upgrade most of the class offer continuously variable transmissions, and this one does have a continuously variable transmission with the base 2-liter engine.
But thankfully, with this upgraded motor, more power and the dual clutch really makes for a nice combination, you know plenty of power getting up to speed. The shifting is really nice and smooth and really quick, because it is a dual clutch yeah.
Now, if you do go for the other engine, you will have a cvt um. So once again, another thing to consider when you check out the different trim levels now just uh kind of cruising along here. I do want to mention the ride quality of the 2022 Hyundai Kona.
So this does ride very good, especially for this class of vehicle. You can typically sometimes get you know, not so great rides. You know when you get below the compact class and this actually, it feels larger than it does, and that translates to your ride quality as well.
It really soaks up the bumps well, and i’m just overall, very comfortable in here, and that’s actually going to be today’s. Slam, dunk is just the fact that this 2022 Hyundai Kona has a lot a lot of space, and it really does feel almost a segment above what it actually is, and it’s kind of a dual slam.
Now, as far as the fuel economy is concerned, uh for the base two liter model with front drive that’s, going to be 32 miles a gallon combined. If you get the 1.6 liter, you’re, actually not going to sacrifice any fuel economy at all. So you’re, just getting the extra power, which is certainly a benefit at 32 miles, a gallon combined with front drive and then, if you get, the all-wheel drive is 29.. We’ll, get a sound like reading here and before we slowed down there, we were sitting at around 58 and a half decibels and that’s, particularly worth noting.
How much the 2022 Hyundai Kona Price?
The price um with this limited trim level it’s. We’ll talk about it in just a second: it’s a little bit expensive um and it’s, not incredibly expensive for the class per se, but really it’s just kind of in terms of the tucson which we’ve, been spending a lot of time with you can get a pretty well equipped tucson.
Which does feel like a more substantial vehicle and more luxurious vehicle for a similar price point to this. So the se is going to be 20 500 scl223 and the limited’s, going to start at $26.300. Now this one, as equipped with all wheel, drive plus the $1.185 destination charge, is going to come in at $31,705.
