2022 Cadillac Lyriq – As part of the new Cadillac release, senior vice president of Cadillac Motor Company, Rory Harley issued a statement confirming the company’s plan to phase out the Cadillac line and to introduce a new all-electric car later this decade. In the statement, Harley indicated that the decision is part of the company’s long-term plan to reduce its manufacturing footprint and focus more on building vehicles with electric motors.

It is unclear at this point exactly what type of vehicle the company will make, but General Motors has been repeatedly saying that it plans to keep its small sedan family (Cadillac, Corvette, Chrysler, and pickups) and the Cadillac Escalade SUV for corporate use. For many years, the Cadillac brand was known as the Cadillac symbolized by show cars like the La Ferrari and the Capitola.

So, which type of vehicle will the company finally offer? In today’s release, Harley did not reveal much, except to say that “this next-generation Cadillac vehicle will have an all-new electric powertrain, building on the industry standard,” adding “no further modifications will be made to the current Cadillac lineup.” Could the all-new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV be part of a new trend toward smaller, less powerful vehicles? Or, is the new vehicle simply an updated Cadillac pickup?
According to the press release, the company’s plan is to build two types of vehicles: the Cadillac CTS, and the all-new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq. No specific manufacturer information was provided in the release, but it appears the first half of the decade may be a point where production model for the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq will be revealed. If this is indeed the case, we should start hearing more about the vehicle around late 2021. Could we see production for this vehicle beginning in late 2021, before the start of the new decade, or even early 2021? Stay tuned!
The second half of the decade, which will most likely be a full-sized production model for the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq, should offer some great opportunities for marketing and advertising. The all-new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicle will most likely compete with the Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, Mazda 3, and Nissan Armada, all of which are currently leading in the fuel economy stakes.
So, what should be the focus of attention for a future Caddy? As previously mentioned, the all-new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq will be built around the “new Cadillac CTS,” but will have its own distinct design. The release does not offer any hints as to what this new design will look like.
So, with all that said, if we do get a production model for the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq in 2022, what should we expect? Well, one possibility is the vehicle will not carry the now expected Cadillac trademark fender. It could be that a new design is brought forth with the SUV, possibly with revised floor plans, larger tires, and modified bumpers. If this is the case, then it would be easy to see a production SUV, like the upcoming Ford Escape, follow the trend set by the CTS.
Other rumors are that the new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq, which can travel up to a combined total of about 600 miles between charge sessions, will be powered by General Motors’ new battery. The batteries for these types of vehicles have been around for a while now, but have not been manufactured specifically for use in a sport-utility type vehicle.
They are generally small and somewhat unstable, and require a great deal of manual operation to keep them charged. In fact, the majority of owners of luxury vehicles will never even attempt to start their vehicles if they do not have full power, fully charged batteries. The new 2022 Cadillac Lyriq, therefore, may be positioned to take advantage of this new market.
Another potential design for the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq includes a combination of fuel cells, standard air conditioning, and a high speed electric motor. This design might be similar to that of the new Chevrolet Volt, but would most likely involve the use of a standard battery and standard air conditioning.
Since the Lyriq’s proposed design does not eliminate the need for fast charging, GM could be stuck with a vehicle that cannot fast charge, and therefore will never reach its intended driving range. If you are in the market for a vehicle with a fast charging port, however, the 2022 Cadillac Lyriq may be worth a look.
